A smiling Nell Flanders poses in front of a granite wall.NELL FLANDERS has led performances with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chelsea Symphony, Mannes Orchestra, Peabody Symphony Orchestra and the Riverside Orchestra, among others. During 2016-17 she served as cover conductor with the Peabody Opera Theater, a role she also filled with the Buffalo Philharmonic for part of their 2014-15 season. An enthusiastic proponent of today’s music, Ms. Flanders has conducted many orchestral and operatic premieres including works by Daniel Felsenfeld, Robert Cuckson, and Jochem Le Cointre.

Deeply committed to educating the next generation of musicians and music lovers, Ms. Flanders leads the Symphony Orchestra at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division where she also teaches conducting and violin lessons and coaches chamber music. As director of the advanced orchestra of the Youth Music Camp of the National Concert Association in Panama City, Panama, Ms. Flanders travels to Panama twice a year to conduct and teach. She has previously taught at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, University of Chicago, Vandercook College of Music, Utah State University, and Hoff- Barthelson Music School.

A musician of great versatility, Ms. Flanders performs in a variety of genres, including classical, baroque, blues, and contemporary. An accomplished violinist, she has appeared as soloist with the Chelsea Symphony and the Philharmonisch Orkest Mozart in Amsterdam, and her orchestral work includes performances with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Chicago Opera Theater among many others.

A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory with a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance and a minor in piano performance, Ms. Flanders received a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting from the Mannes School of Music and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in orchestral conducting with Marin Alsop at the Peabody Conservatory.

In addition to her musical work, Nell enjoys rock climbing, dancing Argentine tango, and exploring other cultures through travel and language study.
