Responding Creatively to Music

Approximately twenty-five talented middle school students will attend the Princeton Symphony Orchestra’s Saturday March 23, 2019 concert at 8PM. For the Listen UP! program, they will listen to Missy Mazzoli‘s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), performed by the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Rossen Milanov.

These PSO BRAVO! Listen Up! writers and visual artists have been invited to respond freely or consider prompts relating to the specific history of the piece and composer, the musical styles exhibited, and the experience of attending and listening to a live musical performance.

The Listen Up! exhibition will be displayed at the PSO’s Sunday, May 19 Mango Suite concert at Richardson Auditorium and at the Arts Council of Princeton’s Paul Robeson Center for the Arts from Tuesday, May 21 through Sunday, June 2, 2019. The students’ works can also be seen in the exhibition catalog, which will be published after the concert.

Listen Up! 2017 – 2018

Listen Up! students delved into Schulhoff’s Concerto for String Quartet and Winds, performed by the LARK Quartet and the PSO under the direction of conductor Rossen Milanov on Sunday, October 29, 2017. Before the concert, the students met members of the LARK Quartet. They learned about the composer’s life and gained insights into the musicians’ interpretive process as a prelude to forming their own creative responses to the music. Teaching artist Susan Hoenig guided them through the process of receptive listening and the practice of creative, artistic response. They attended the MENDELSSOHN “Reformation” concert to hear Schulhoff’s work performed live.

The students’ visual art and creative writing was on display on January 28, 2018 at the PSO’s Dinnerstein Plays BACH and GLASS concert.

The Listen Up! exhibition was on view January 30 – February 26, 2018 at the Arts Council of Princeton’s Paul Robeson Center at 102 Witherspoon St., Princeton, NJ.

About PSO BRAVO! Listen Up!

Middle school students can let their imagination run free with Listen Up!, a program that explores the connections between live music and other forms of expressive art.

In past years, participating students have attended a Classical Series concert as a group, and then captured their individual reactions by creating original artwork. A creative writing component was added in the 2013-14 season.
